Governor David Paterson’s hopes for re-election next fall have taken a hit.

The White House has leaked word that President Obama does not want to see Paterson run for another term as Governor.

This comes as Paterson’s first opponent, area Republican Rick Lazio, is set to officially announce his candidacy and then campaign all week across New York State.

Also, as President Obama makes a trip to New York today, he and Paterson are scheduled to meet at a community college in Troy. Meeting with them will be the man everyone wants to run for the gubernatorial office – fellow Democrat and State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

At an appearance in Harlem yesterday, Governor Paterson made it known that the news has not deterred him in his plans.

“My plans have not changed,” Paterson said defiantly. “I am running for office.”

Paterson’s current approval ratings in New York State hover around 20%. Among his fellow Democrats, Paterson only carries a 24% approval rating.

Four people will be honored at this Thursday’s Vincentian Heritage Week Convocation.

Two are alumni: former Niagara baseball infielder, the late Joe McCarthy, went on to manage the New York Yankees after his college career, guiding such players as Babe Ruth, Phil Rizzuto, and Joe DiMaggio.

The other is the late Nerses Krikorian, who worked on the infamous Manhattan Project, creating the nuclear bombs that ended World War II by destroying two Japanese cities.

Both men will be inducted into the third class of “Niagara Legacy: Alumni of Distinction.”

Niagara’s own Dr. Nancy McGlen, Dean of Arts & Sciences, will be presented with the Vincentian Mission Award. And Sister Barbara Pfohl of Niagara Falls will receive the Caritas Medal in recognition of her work at Heart, Love and Soul food pantry and dining room.

A new H1-N1 flu vaccine could be in the United States by mid-October. A French company is currently putting the finishing touches on the formula.

The FDA has already approved a sample of the drug.

The United Nations just a few days ago warned of an impending worldwide shortage in swine flu vaccine stocks, because some other vaccine manufacturers are busy researching medicines for the normal, seasonal flu.

There’s rain in the forecast this afternoon and evening – the first time it will have rained this semester.

A 22-day dry spell has made for some great outdoor activities, but has sapped the earth of its moisture. However, the rain-free three week period did provide a respite for a region that suffered an otherwise cold and wet summer.

Two burglaries in Niagara Falls over the weekend. Ninth Street and Seventh Street both saw homes broken into. Among the items stolen: a Playstation 3 along with several games; copper piping; and several hot water tanks.
